Russians are coming in Siargao this April

SURIGAO CITY, March 10 (PNA) - Eighteen Russian game fishing enthusiasts and three Russian journalists have confirmed their participation for the 1st Siargao Invitational Game Fishing Tournament at scenic Magpopongko Beach in Pilar town, Siargao Island on April 16-19, 2008.
Three Russians and other foreign journalists are expected to cover the event, officials said.
"The Russians are coming,” says Surigao del Norte 1st District Rep. Francisco Tinio Matugas.
The event is the first ever game fishing event held at the country’s surfing capital.
Game fishing either in fresh and saltwater is now one of the fastest growing sports event among sport fishing enthusiasts or anglers around the world.
Matugas said three of the country’s most prestigious game fishing clubs, the Philippine Game Fishing Foundation, the Philippine Sports Fishing Club and the Silver Jack Fishing Club of Manila had already confirmed participation for the said tournament, the first ever to be held in Siargao Island, one of the richest fishing grounds in the country.
Other participants who have confirmed participation were anglers from Hongkong, Japan , Malaysia , Taiwan and local game fishing sports enthusiasts.
Cash prizes with trophies will be awarded to individuals with highest weight points and those with heaviest catch.

Siargao Mayors headed by Surigao del Norte Mayor’s League President Constantino Bernardo Navarro, IV who is Municipal Mayor of Del Carmen, Siargao Island said they are expecting President Arroyo to grace the occasion.
Matugas said President Arroyo had confirmed to him her presence as guest of honor in the biggest sports spectacle next to surfing that will hit Siargao Island dubbed as today’s major tourists destination in the country.
Aside from it being the country’s surfing capital and rich fishing ground with hundreds of fish species found, Siargao Island is home of best beaches in the country because of its white sand beaches and crystal clear sea waters.
Dapa Mayor Peter Boy Ruaya said Dapa seaport, which is the entry point of all tourists who wish to to tour the beautiful island, is now being prepared as hundreds if not thousands will arrive in flock to witness sports fishing.
Siargao Island which formed part of Surigao del Norte province has nine municipalities and Dapa town is the port of entry and is only two hour and a half motorboat ride from Surigao City. By fast crafts, Dapa is only an hour sometimes less an hour ride. (PNA)
